India's largest lender, State Bank of India, has reportedly signed a strategic partnership agreement with Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG Bank) , marking a major development in cross-border banking cooperation between India and Japan.

The announcement comes shortly after SBI raised $1 billion (around Rs 9,100 crore) through a five-year social loan arranged by MUFG, the first financing of its kind raised by an Indian bank.

Earlier financing deal between SBI and MUFG

In February, SBI secured the $1 billion social loan facility, priced roughly 90 basis points above the SOFR benchmark, through MUFG's international network.

The proceeds from the facility are intended to support social impact lending, particularly financing women-led businesses and initiatives focused on economic empowerment, according to reports.

This is a developing story and further details of the partnership may emerge.
