The Last of Us Season 3: Release date window, cast updates and story details - Everything we know so far

As of now, filming has begun for The Last of Us Season 3 and we anticipate that it will release from HBO in 2027.

The new season will continue adapting the 2019 video game called, The Last of Us Part II, which is a bulk of the second half of the video's story using Abby's point of view during the same period of time as Season Two (including showing Seattle Day One jump at end of Season Two).

The Last of Us Season 3: Release date window

Casey Bloys, HBO's Chairman and CEO, confirmed in 2025 that "the series is definitely planned for 2027," but there is no announcement about an official premiere date. Production began in March 2026 and is anticipated to continue until November 2026, using working titles such as Mega Sword and Calm Current and filming in Metro Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. This timeline is consistent with previous seasons of the show and would likely release sometime in 2027 (possibly spring or later, depending on when post-production is completed). However, other sources have suggested that if any delays occur, it could ultimately release in early 2028 but the goal is still to release it in 2027.

Craig Mazin is the new showrunner and is going it alone this season; Neil Druckmann has chosen to step back creatively after finishing Season 2 due to other Naughty Dog projects. At this time, it is still unknown if this will be the final season; while Bloys stated that based on how he views things, it certainly feels like it would be the conclusion to the series, he will defer to the showrunners for any further determination.

The Last of Us Season 3: Cast updates

Season 3 centers heavily on her story, providing deeper context for her motivations and experiences in Seattle.

The cast members includes

  • Bella Ramsey as Ellie: Returns, though in a reduced role compared to Season 2 as the narrative shifts perspectives.
  • Isabela Merced as Dina.
  • Gabriel Luna as Tommy.
  • Jeffrey Wright as Isaac Dixon.
  • Young Mazino as Jesse.
  • Spencer Lord as Owen (promoted to series regular).
  • Ariela Barer as Mel (promoted to series regular).
  • Tati Gabrielle as Nora (promoted to series regular).

Recasts and new additional cast includes

  • Jorge Lendeborg Jr. replaces Danny Ramirez as Manny (due to Ramirez's scheduling conflicts with Avengers films).
  • Michelle Mao as Yara.
  • Kyriana Kratter as Lev (set photos show them filming with Dever).
  • Clea DuVall as a Seraphite (member of the religious cult/"Scars").

Patrick Wilson in a recurring role as Jerry Anderson (Abby's father, in flashbacks/backstory).

Jason Ritter in a recurring role as an original character (WLF soldier Hanley).

Other potential returns include Alanna Ubach as Hanrahan and Rutina Wesley as Maria.

Pedro Pascal (Joel) is not expected in a major capacity, though flashbacks remain possible (as in prior seasons). Catherine O'Hara (Gail) passed away in early 2026 and will not return.

Recent set photos from Vancouver show Dever as Abby (with visible neck bruising suggesting a post - Seraphite encounter scene) alongside Kratter as Lev, climbing in a post-apocalyptic setting-hinting at faithful game adaptations involving the Seraphites and their dynamic.

The Last of Us Season 3: Story details

Abby will be revealed as the main character in the third season after being introduced at the end of season 2. She has been established as Josel's friend and has ties to Joel through their past experiences.

The show will look at Abby's point of view of the events in Seattle; how she interacts with the world around her (the WLF and Seraphites), how she is affected by her father's murder at Joel's hands, and how this affects the relationships Abby has with others (Owen, Mel, and Yara/Lev). The series will address the themes of violence, trauma and redemption, much like the game's story.

The action will be violent, there will be a lot of emotion, and there will be ambiguity in the moral choices made by the characters throughout the story as each character tries to achieve their own goals of overcoming their pasts (which may include the 'Santa Barbara' storyline of the game later on in the season) in the context of the three main characters' actions in Part II of the game (in which all characters fall victim or hurt others). The "Seattle Day 1" card shown at the end of season 2 confirms this as the lead-up to how the characters got to where they are in the series.

At present, there is still no trailer or other previews of the series (as of October 2026) since filming has not started. The production team includes PlayStation Productions, Sony Pictures Television, Naughty Dog and Craig Mazin. All other details about the series (total episode count, guest stars, small story changes etc) should continue to evolve as productions take place.

For fans of The Last of Us video games, expect to see a quality, thoughtful adaptation of the source material, in the same visual style and cinematic quality as the first two seasons.
