Who is Nizar Amedi?

Nizar Amedi (also spelled Nizar Amidi) is a seasoned Kurdish politician and a prominent member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Born in 1968 in Amedi district, Duhok Governorate, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, he comes from a family with deep roots in the PUK.

Amedi has built a long career in Iraqi politics and governance:

• Early ties to PUK leadership: He is widely regarded as a close confidant of the late Iraqi President Jalal Talabani (known as "Mam Jalal") and maintains strong relations with the Talabani family.
• Government experience: He previously served as Iraq's Minister of Environment. He also acted as an adviser to three Iraqi presidents between 2005 and 2022.
• Current roles: Amedi heads the PUK's Politburo office in Baghdad, making him a key bridge between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government in the capital. His brother, Gohdar (or Gohar) Amedi, serves as chief of staff to the current president.
