In a significant political development, the Iraqi Council of Representatives has elected Nizar Amidi as the new President of the Republic of Iraq.

The vote marks the successful conclusion of months of negotiations and reflects broad consensus among Iraq's major political blocs.

Who is Nizar Amedi?

Nizar Amedi (also spelled Nizar Amidi) is a seasoned Kurdish politician and a prominent member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Born in 1968 in Amedi district, Duhok Governorate, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, he comes from a family with deep roots in the PUK.

Amedi has built a long career in Iraqi politics and governance:

  • Early ties to PUK leadership: He is widely regarded as a close confidant of the late Iraqi President Jalal Talabani (known as "Mam Jalal") and maintains strong relations with the Talabani family.
  • Government experience: He previously served as Iraq's Minister of Environment. He also acted as an adviser to three Iraqi presidents between 2005 and 2022.
  • Current roles: Amedi heads the PUK's Politburo office in Baghdad, making him a key bridge between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government in the capital. His brother, Gohdar (or Gohar) Amedi, serves as chief of staff to the current president.

Known for his diplomatic approach and institutional experience, Nizar Amedi is seen as a unifying figure within Kurdish politics. Although he hails from Duhok-a traditional stronghold of the rival Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)-his loyalty to the PUK has remained steadfast. He has been involved in high-level negotiations and is respected for his ability to navigate Baghdad's complex political landscape
