Domestic Market

Sugar Prices Hold Steady Amid Tight Supply Concerns and Firm Demand

After witnessing a recent rise, sugar prices traded steady across major domestic markets today, supported by persistent concerns over tightening domestic supplies.

Despite the government's export restrictions aimed at ensuring adequate local availability, market sentiment remained firm due to expectations of lower supply and steady demand from bulk consumers.

In North India, M-grade sugar prices in Muzaffarnagar were quoted at ₹4,100-₹4,180 per quintal, largely unchanged from the previous session. Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, S-grade sugar prices in Kolhapur were reported at ₹3,840-₹3,880 per quintal, also maintaining a steady trend.

Meanwhile, the Food Ministry has allocated a monthly sugar quota of 22.5 lakh tonnes for June 2026, unchanged from the previous month but lower by around 0.5 lakh tonnes compared to the same month last season. Expectations of lower rainfall and above-normal temperatures are likely to keep seasonal demand firm, which may continue to support domestic sugar prices in the near term.

Overall, tightening supply conditions, controlled monthly release quotas, and sustained seasonal demand are expected to keep the sugar market supported, although government intervention may continue to limit any sharp upside movement.
