India and Fiji have renewed focus on strengthening cooperation in the sugar sector, alongside broader agricultural ties, during a high-level meeting held this week, ap 7 am reported.
India's High Commissioner to Fiji Suneet Mehta met Fiji's Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Tomasi Tunabuna, with discussions placing emphasis on support for Fiji's sugar industry and capacity building in agriculture.
Officials said the talks explored ways to improve productivity, enhance skills and deepen collaboration in sugarcane farming and related industries, which remain vital to Fiji's economy.
The meeting is part of a series of engagements aimed at expanding India-Fiji cooperation across key sectors. Earlier discussions between the two sides have also covered areas such as climate initiatives, infrastructure and training programmes that can indirectly support agricultural and sugar sector development.
India has been actively supporting Fiji's nation-building efforts, including technical assistance and capacity-building initiatives that benefit sectors like sugar, which plays a key role in employment and exports.
Bilateral ties between the two countries have continued to grow in recent years, with cooperation in agriculture and sugar expected to remain a key focus area going forward.
