Bangkok: Ensuring sugarcane farming supports environmental protection remains a major challenge for the sugar industry, and Thailand-based Mitr Phol Group has stepped up efforts to address it during the 2025-26 crushing season, The Nation reported.

The company has promoted fresh sugarcane harvesting and modern farming practices through its "Let's Green the Sugarcane" campaign, aimed at reducing environmental impact while improving farm output. The initiative, supported by government policies and farmer participation, has resulted in up to 96% of fresh sugarcane being supplied to mills this season.

Alongside this, the company has continued its sugarcane leaf purchasing programme, now in its eighth year, helping farmers earn additional income. The collected leaves are used as fuel for biomass-based power generation, contributing to clean energy production in the agricultural sector.

Chairman Buntoeng Vongkusolkit said the progress reflects strong cooperation among farmers, communities, government agencies and the private sector.

He noted that farmers have increasingly adopted the company's modern farming approach, known as "Mitr Phol Modern Farm," and are shifting towards fresh cane harvesting. According to him, this change is not just about farming methods but also about moving towards more sustainable agricultural practices.

The company said it will continue to support farmers with technology, knowledge and innovation, while aligning its efforts with government plans to improve raw material standards and strengthen Thailand's position in the global sugar industry.
