Samastipur: Farmers in Samastipur and other parts of north Bihar, who face recurring losses due to waterlogging, may soon find relief with the introduction of improved sugarcane varieties suited for such conditions, News18 Hindi reported.

Prolonged water stagnation in fields often damages traditional crops like paddy and wheat, leading to significant financial losses. However, agricultural scientists have now identified sugarcane varieties that can withstand waterlogged conditions, offering farmers a more stable and reliable crop option.

According to scientists from Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa, varieties such as Rajendra Ganna-2 and BO-91 are well-suited for areas prone to waterlogging. These varieties continue to grow upwards even when fields are flooded, preventing crop damage and maintaining yield levels.

Experts said timely sowing is crucial, as it allows the crop to establish itself before the onset of flooding. This helps reduce the risk of damage and ensures steady production.

They added that sugarcane, being a cash crop, can provide consistent income to farmers, especially when supported by suitable varieties and proper techniques. In waterlogged regions, yields of up to 80 tonnes per hectare are achievable with these improved varieties.

Officials believe that adopting such scientific practices can help farmers reduce losses caused by adverse weather conditions and improve their long-term income prospects.
