Death Toll Rises to 25 in Tamil Nadu Firecracker Factory Blast in Virudhunagar
The death toll in the devastating firecracker factory blast near Kattanarpatti in Virudhunagar has risen to 25, with 22 women among the deceased, officials confirmed on Monday.
The explosion occurred on Sunday at the Vanaja Firecracker Unit, owned by Muthumanickam and operating under the jurisdiction of the Vachakarapatti police station.
According to authorities, the factory was licensed by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), Nagpur. However, preliminary investigations indicate serious violations of safety norms. The blast is believed to have originated in a chemical mixing shed where nearly 40 workers were present, far exceeding the permitted limit of four workers per shed.
The tragedy left eight workers, mostly women, critically injured with severe burn injuries of around 60%, while several others sustained injuries. Rescue operations were significantly hampered as unexploded materials continued to detonate at the site.
In a shocking turn, a second explosion occurred around 7:20 pm on Sunday during debris-clearing operations by an earthmover. This blast injured at least 12 people, including eight police personnel and a revenue official, causing panic among rescue teams and further complicating relief efforts.
Authorities have registered an FIR and launched a detailed investigation into the incident. A senior IAS officer has been appointed to oversee the situation and ensure accountability. Officials are now probing possible negligence and violations that may have led to the deadly explosion.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over safety standards in firecracker manufacturing units, particularly in regions like Virudhunagar, which is known for such industries.
