After India's win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, head coach Gautam Gambhir is not ready to relax, and the veteran wants to lead the team to the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27. Test cricket is close to Gambhir's heart.
India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final of the global tournament to defend their title. India became the first team to clinch the T20 World Cup title at home, the first team to win two consecutive ICC trophies in the shortest format, and the first side to emerge victorious on three occasions.
In the last two years, India have won two T20 World Cups and also the Champions Trophy. However, the team has failed to cross the finishing line in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
The sub-continent nation made it to the final of the WTC twice but lost to New Zealand and Australia.
"Test cricket is close to my heart, and I hope we qualify for the final of the World Test Championship. It is my target, and I think we will compete in nine more Test matches. We have gone through a transition phase in red-ball cricket, and it is difficult compared to white-ball cricket," Gambhir told ANI.
"We will back the young boys as Test cricket is not easy. The next target is the WTC Final," he added.
Gambhir mentioned that he values Test cricket a lot, and many Indian players share the same passion.
"Most of the boys in the dressing room like Test cricket. It is the only format where you can score a hundred, double hundred and a triple hundred. When you win a match after five days of hard work, there is no greater satisfaction. Test cricket gives you happiness," he concluded.
India haven't been impressive in Test cricket under Gambhir's tenure and are currently placed six on the WTC points table, with just four wins from nine games.
