Shubman Gill was absent from the Gujarat Titans vs Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 match in Ahmedabad on Saturday, a loss that proved costly for GT as they fell short of chasing a target of 211 runs, marking their second defeat of the season.
In Gill's absence, Rashid Khan captained the side."Gill is dealing with a muscle spasm. We’re hopeful he’ll return soon," said Rashid.
Looking ahead, the Gujarat Titans are set to face the Delhi Capitals on April 8. Parthiv Patel, the team's assistant coach, expressed optimism regarding Gill's swift recovery and potential return.
"He had a neck sprain during the India vs South Africa Test in November 2025, and then he had a spasm a couple of days ago. We're hoping he'll be fit for the next game. It doesn't seem too serious. Injury management isn't my area of expertise, but I can confidently say that he should be fine," said Parthiv Patel.
Earlier, Gujarat's batting coach Matthew Hayden spoke highly of Gill's growth as both a player and a leader. Hayden praised his clear mindset and modern-day confidence, which have been crucial to his success at the highest level.
"Shubman is a very clear thinker when it comes to the game, and that reflects his deep understanding of cricket, particularly at the highest level and in Test cricket," said Hayden.
"He brings a lot of confidence to the table. He has a bit of the swagger of the modern generation, which I really appreciate.
"But regardless of the team he plays for, he always selflessly emphasizes. I've seen him say this in many press conferences and his focus is very much on the team," he added.
