Gautam Gambhir's stint as a head coach of Team India has begun on a rather ordinary note. He assumed the role of coach after Rahul Dravid decided to relinquish the post after successfully leading the country to win the 2024 T20 World Cup held in the USA and West Indies.
Gambhir was given an important position as head and some high expectations but the side has struggled so far.
As a new head coach of the team, Gambhir has the responsibility of emulating Dravid's achievements and moving the side further upward. The burden to deliver lies on Gambhir now and he needs to show that he can coach the team well.
Gautam Gambhir Struggles vs Rahul Dravid Success

Rahul Dravid became the head coach of the Indian cricket team post the T20 World Cup held in 2021, with him having a rich coaching background. Before being appointed as the head coach, he had helped India win the U19 World Cup and had worked on nurturing domestic talent at the NCA. Under Dravid, India got off to a winning start, clinching the T20I series 3-0 against New Zealand and the Test series 2-0. Despite troubles in South Africa, Dravid's performance was great; he won 5 of 19 initial games.
He did not lose even a single T20I and lost three ODIs and two Test matches. During his reign, Dravid worked from the position of a head coach as a stable leader and brought several successes for the Indian team.
On another front, the team's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has a pretty average record, having 8 losses in 19 matches on average. He assumed the responsibility with great expectations given his performance in the previous seasons, leading the Lucknow Super Giants to two IPL playoffs and KKR to the title. India managed to register a T20I series victory under Gambhir but in the 50-over format, India was completely outplayed and defeated 2-0 by Sri Lanka.
They came back strong with a series victory over Bangladesh, but they suffered a massive blow when New Zealand whitewashed them in the Test series on home soil. India was defeated by Australia 1-3 in the Border-Gavaskar series as well. Here, Gambhir has a record of 6 Test losses in 19 games and 2 ODI losses in the first 19 games as India's head coach.
