IPL 2025: Reason Behind Sanju Samson's Sudden Retirement Hurt In DC vs RR

Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson was forced to retire hurt despite being in fine form during their IPL 2025 encounter against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.

The wicketkeeper-batter opted to leave the field after sustaining a left rib injury, which left him in significant discomfort and unable to continue.

Clearly distressed, he made his way back to the dressing room. The incident took place during the sixth over, bowled by leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam, who had just been brought into the attack. Samson immediately took the initiative, scoring 11 runs off the first three balls-including a boundary and a maximum.

However, on the third delivery, Samson played an aggressive lofted shot toward long-on and was seen writhing in pain soon after. Unable to continue, he retired hurt, making way for Riyan Parag. At that point, Samson had scored 31 off 19 balls, and the Royals were cruising at 61 without loss.

Interestingly, the 30-year-old had featured only as an Impact Player in RR’s first three matches of the season, as he was recovering from a finger injury. During that period, Riyan Parag led the side. The severity of Samson's latest injury is yet to be determined.

The Delhi Capitals posted 189, leaving Sanju Samson's side with a challenging chase

Sanju Samson won the toss at the Arun Jaitley Stadium and opted to bowl first, reasoning that batting conditions would improve as the match progressed. The Delhi Capitals suffered early setbacks, losing Jake Fraser-McGurk (9) and Karun Nair (0) cheaply. However, opener Abhishek Porel steadied the innings with a composed 49 off 37 balls.

Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs both chipped in with crucial knocks of 34, while Ashutosh Sharma added an unbeaten 15, helping the Capitals reach a competitive total of 188/5 in their 20 overs. Jofra Archer stood out with the ball for Rajasthan Royals, returning figures of 2 for 32 in his four overs. The Royals are in dire need of a victory, having suffered consecutive defeats leading into this clash.
