Cricket fans will no longer enjoy free streaming of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on JioHotstar, the newly launched streaming platform resulting from the merger of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar under the JioStar venture.
The platform, introduced on Friday, has revamped its streaming model, requiring users to subscribe to a plan starting at ₹149 to watch IPL matches. Previously, JioCinema allowed free IPL streaming since acquiring the broadcasting rights for five years in 2023 for $3 billion. However, starting in 2025, only a few minutes of each match will be available for free, after which users will be redirected to a subscription page.
Subscription Plans and Features
JioHotstar offers multiple subscription tiers that cater to different user preferences. The basic plan starts at ₹149 ($1.72), while a premium ad-free experience is available for ₹499 ($5.75) for three months.
KKRThe platform aims to enhance user experience with ultra-HD 4K streaming, AI-powered insights, real-time statistics overlays, and multi-angle viewing options. Additionally, JioHotstar will serve as the primary hub for prestigious sports events, including ICC tournaments, the IPL, WPL, and domestic leagues such as Pro Kabaddi and the ISL.
Impact of the Reliance-Disney Merger
This shift in IPL streaming policy follows the $8.5 billion merger between Reliance Industries and Walt Disney's Indian media assets, forming the JioStar venture. According to insiders, the decision aligns with the strategy of initially offering free content to attract users before implementing subscription charges.
The move signifies JioHotstar's effort to compete with global streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime in India's $28-billion media and entertainment market. While the new model may disappoint cricket enthusiasts accustomed to free access, JioHotstar aims to provide a premium and immersive viewing experience for its subscribers.
