Mitchell Owen began his international career with a dream all-round showing to win the match on his T20I debut as Australia defeated the West Indies in a three-wicket result.
West Indies seemed on course to a huge score with Roston Chase (60 off 32) and Shai Hope (55 off 39) putting them on 123 for 1 after 13 overs. But Australia bowlers, with Ben Dwarshuis (4 for 36) and Nathan Ellis, put the brakes on, claiming 4 for 7 in the last 16 balls to restrict the hosts to 189 for 8.
Three wickets in the 19th over by Dwarshuis brought the collapse, whilst Ellis bowled with precision, dropping slower balls and yorkers to mute the death overs. Cameron Green made a breathtaking leaping catch on the ropes off the bowling of Nathan Lyon to deny Hetmyer a six as Australia rounded off a very disciplined fielding performance.
Mitchell Owen's Breakthrough
Owen declared his presence by taking Andre Russell over the rope with his first ball and then ruthlessly assaulted Hosein with three successive sixes in an over in the run chase. In the match against the West Indies, he had blasted 50 runs off 27 balls, and taking an important wicket, he helped Australia win that match by three wickets. Owen played a great combination of aggressiveness and maturity, and it is because of his talent and capability.
It was a critical partnership after Owen joined Cameron Green to get Australia out of 78 for 4. Green hit straight back by sending Alzarri Joseph off with back-to-back sixes. Green and Owen, of course, led the rest of the batting lineup, which displayed their talent and experience.
In a tumultuous finish, Cooper Connolly, Dwarshuis, and Sean Abbott showed ice-cool calmness to wrap up a seven-ball victory. Owen made his breakthrough appearance all the sweeter when he was given his first cap on the international stage up by close mate and Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis, with his parents and partner spectating in the seats. The victory offers Australia a 1-0 advantage in the five-game series, and Owen has even established the stage for a prosperous international career.
