Huge blow for CSK! Australia star suffers fracture days before IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered an injury scare before the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is expected to begin on March 28. According to the latest reports, Australian all-rounder Matt Short has suffered a fracture in his thumb, raising concerns about his availability.

Short was secured by the five-time champions for his base price of Rs 1.50 crore during the auction. He is an exciting prospect for the upcoming season due to his versatility. His ability to provide explosive starts and chip in with crucial wickets makes him an ideal fit for the tactical demands of the side.

Matt Short Ruled Out of IPL 2026 for CSK?

According to Code Sports, Matt Short has suffered a fracture in the top of his thumb. However, the all-rounder is likely to join CSK before the start of the season. Short previously had a modest stint with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2023, where he scored 119 runs in six matches.

The news was confirmed on social media, with a report stating, "Matt Short has a fracture in the top of his thumb but is expected to head to the IPL as scheduled to play for Chennai Super Kings."

Before his thumb fracture, Short also had to deal with disappointment on the international stage. He was initially named in Australia's preliminary 15-player group for the World Cup. However, he was unexpectedly left out of the final squad.

The national selectors opted to replace Short with Matthew Renshaw instead. Short had been in the middle of Australia's disastrous three-game tour of Pakistan when he received the news. He flew back home to Australia after playing the final two T20 Internationals against Pakistan.

Dewald Brevis to Be Preferred Over Matthew Short

The main focus for CSK in the batting department was to strengthen the team with a solid Indian core. They traded Sanju Samson from the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and invested in two promising youngsters, Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma.

With Indian batters like Ayush Mhatre, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and MS Dhoni already in the playing XI, the team has a very settled batting unit. Because of this strong Indian core, CSK only has one overseas slot left in the batting order.

South African star Dewald Brevis will get the chance ahead of other overseas players. Brevis came in as a late replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh last season. He scored 225 runs in just six matches with an impressive strike rate of 180, including two half-centuries.

Matthew Short's Role as a Backup Player

The major hurdle for Short heading into the IPL 2026 season is the strict overseas player quota. CSK already has very strong overseas options across all their departments. While Brevis adds extreme explosiveness in the middle order, Noor Ahmad leads the spin attack.

Furthermore, the pace bowling department is fully covered by overseas quicks Henry and Ellis. It will be extremely difficult for the franchise to accommodate Matthew Short in the starting lineup unless injuries strike the camp.

The Australian all-rounder appears to be a backup option rather than a first-choice player for the team. Even though he can deliver with both bat and ball, he will likely have to wait for his opportunity on the bench.
