3 Players Who Can Replace Ayush Mhatre in CSK XI for the Remainder of IPL 2026

The Chennai Super Kings have received a massive blow as young batter Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of IPL 2026 with a hamstring tear.

18-year old Ayush has been one of CSK's most potent attackers of the season having scored 201 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 177.88. Mhatre was pulling up while taking a sharp single against SRH in Hyderabad and continued with difficulty and scans confirmed that Mhatre has a hamstring tear and will likely miss out of the remainder of the IPL.

This leaves CSK with a huge decision to make before they take on Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on April 23rd as they need to replace their most exciting young batter.

3 Players Who Can Replace Ayush Mhatre in CSK XI

Urvil Patel

Urvil Patel is perhaps the closest replacement to Mhatre with regards to his attacking approach at the top of the order. He too is a fearless hitter of the ball and a quick scorer and even holds one of the fastest T20 hundreds by an Indian. CSK's coaches see him as a natural replacement to keep their powerplay intent alive. With Ruturaj Gaikwad at no. 3 Urvil can play at the top to unleash his attack.

Kartik Sharma

Kartik Sharma was a expensive buy from the auction but has not found his feet so far in this IPL. But he has a tremendous hitting capacity at the domestic level and can open or play at no. 3. This might be his chance to get selected at the top but with the form he has displayed this season it can turn out to be a huge gamble but could possibly lead to a longer run for him in the yellow army.

MS Dhoni

The third possibility is contingent on the fitness of MS Dhoni. If he gets the green light then this option could bring about an entire revamp of the CSK batting order, where Dhoni takes back the finisher’s slot at 7 with other batters filling in to adjust for the opener. Dhoni’s experience and late finishing powers would make the closing overs even more dangerous for CSK, a strength they have lacked this season.

CSK at the Precipice

There are three very diverse options for CSK after Mhatre’s injury: the like-for-like substitute, the highly leveraged, expensive punt or a change in the structure of the CSK lineup with Dhoni coming back. The decision that CSK make could be very important in determining the rest of their IPL 2026.
