According to a recent report from The Times of India, the talented Indian fast bowler is still experiencing discomfort in his left knee after undergoing an initial assessment at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. As a result, everyone involved has agreed that it's best not to rush him back into red-ball cricket until he's fully recovered.

Earlier reports indicated that the BCCI's medical team had recommended an injection to address Bumrah's knee issues, which flared up during the latter stages of the 2026 T20 World Cup. He followed through with the treatment last month, but unfortunately, his recovery has been slower than expected.

While there was some hope that he might be available for the second Test in Colombo, the medical staff at the BCCI Centre of Excellence decided against hurrying his return, prioritizing his complete recovery instead. The team management had a careful plan in place for Bumrah's rehabilitation, which included not having him report to Mumbai on August 3 or travel with the squad for the Sri Lanka series.

Despite being included in the Shubman Gill-led team, Bumrah's selection hinged on receiving medical clearance. With him now officially out for the series, the Ajit Agarkar-led men's senior selection committee is expected to announce a replacement soon, with Auqib Nabi emerging as the frontrunner to step in for Bumrah.

The 29-year-old pacer has been a standout performer for Jammu & Kashmir, consistently taking wickets and making a mark during the India A tour of Sri Lanka, where he claimed six wickets across two matches.
