The ICC is undergoing a major leadership shake-up after a key Pakistan-origin official stepped down from his position. This comes just a year after Jay Shah took charge as ICC chairman.
Jay Shah earlier served as secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and secured unanimous election as ICC chief in December 2024. During his tenure, a Pakistan-origin administrator made an unexpected exit.
Wasim Khan has officially resigned from his position as ICC general manager which he held for four years according to the latest news update. He will officially step down at the end of June 2026 and is likely to begin a new role from July. Khan assumed the general manager position in 2022, replacing Geoff Allardice after Allardice became ICC CEO.
The official schedule handled by him included international cricket matches and Franshise league matches and the Future Tours Program and the Future Tours Program. When Jay Shah became ICC chairman Wasim Khan chose to resign his position. Geoff Allardice exited his position as ICC CEO together with Wasim Khan. Chris Tetley left his position as events head while Alex Marshall exited the anti-corruption unit.
Wasim Khan became a British citizen after he was born in Pakistan and his family moved to England during the late 1950s. He played cricket for Warwickshire Sussex and Derbyshire. He was also part of Warwickshire’s 1995 title-winning squad. After his 2002 retirement from professional sports he began working in administrative positions.
Wasim Khan developed his administrative skills through various professional experiences before joining the International Cricket Council. He held the position of CEO at both the Pakistan Cricket Board and Leicestershire County Cricket Club. He also contributed to Chance to Shine, a major cricket charity in the UK. The British Empire awarded Wasim Khan the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) honour as recognition for his work.
ICC chairman Jay Shah currently sits on the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders (YGL) list which identifies emerging leaders who establish new paths in different sectors. His recognition shows how he increasingly influences international cricket while working to grow the sport worldwide.
At the ICC, Shah expanded cricket to new territories which had not been traditional markets for the sport. He has managed international sporting events which include the 2026 T20 World Cup in India. Jay Shah made his first major contributions to the BCCI before he became an ICC member. He worked as secretary during multiple years while he helped develop women's cricket.
He established the Women's Premier League (WPL) which brought about a new era for women's cricket throughout India. He achieved successful agreements for IPL media rights which made the IPL one of the world's most valuable sports events. The achievements of Jay Shah brought him recognition as a member of the esteemed Young Global Leaders list.
