On March 29, the Board of Cricket Control in India ruled out the automatic double checks during DRS referrals. This means the review will be conducted by the side that asked for it.
And there will be no further clarification of the happenings in case the appeal is turned down.
If asked for an example. Let's assume that if a bowling side asks for a DRS to check an LBW, the DRW will be restricted to checking if the ball touched the pad before the bat and then will track the ball's trajectory.
And the review ends there. There will be no double-check if the ball was a no-ball for height issues. However, if the batter appeals for it, the appeal will be kept.
But what is the catch?
The time. The rebuttal from the opposition is valid within the stipulated 15 seconds of the DRS. In case the side doesn't appeal within those 15 seconds, no more time will be granted. This means whatever decision is given after the initial DRS stays as an established decision.
Earlier, in the Captains' Meet on March 27, BCCI experts used visual aids (like videos or diagrams) to explain specific catches and instances where balls were called wide. They illustrated each scenario in the context of the playing conditions, helping teams understand the rules and reasoning behind these decisions.
What are the other revised rules in this IPL?
The IPL, which began in Bengaluru on March 28, has introduced several updates to its playing conditions. An innings timer will appear on the linear scoreboard on the third ball and at the end of each over, while a 60-second clock will be displayed on the big screen after every over.
Bowler delays will earn two warnings from on-field umpires, with a 5-run penalty awarded to the batting side on the third offense. Concussion replacements are allowed for like-for-like substitutes; wicketkeepers can be replaced from the squad, and overseas players may be replaced by nominated Indian substitutes if the overseas quota is full.
Team sheets are shared after the toss, with captains submitting sheets to the match referee and exchanging copies with managers and the Assistant Venue Manager.
