France Cricket has been plunged into what could be one of the most serious crises in its history after reports surfaced that important government letters confirming the loss of official recognition may have been withheld from the board.
The controversy has developed to the point where the ICC has warned France Cricket and suspended development funds, and asked for significant changes to its governance.
Documents cited by France 24 revealed that in February, the French sports ministry notified France Cricket that it did not have the mandate to run the sport for the 2026-29 cycle. The letter added that "no cricket team shall be received as representing 'France' without the approval of the government".
However, according to minutes of a board meeting held in June, it was revealed that the board members did not even know about the letters for weeks. It is reported that the administration was told to keep all the ministry correspondence in the drawer of the Chairman Prebagarane Balane and not tell any other officials. The chairman intended to deny having received the notice from the ministry.
ICC Freezes Funding and Issues 12-month Warning
The governance issue has now caught the eye of the ICC. The world authority officially confirmed that France Cricket has been put under a warning for non-compliance with its membership criteria.
An ICC spokesperson said:
"France Cricket were placed on notice at the ICC Annual Conference 2026 on account of their non-compliance with the ICC Membership Criteria. They have 12 months to rectify the areas of non-compliance."
It is understood that ICC found France Cricket in breach of several membership criteria, including that it is not recognised as a nation, has poor governance, has an insufficient administrative structure and has failed to submit a compliant long-term development plan.
Alongside the action, development funding of approximately $560,000 for the 2026-27 cycle has been frozen by the ICC.
Government Recognition Remains the Biggest Hurdle
On 1 January, France Cricket lost its official acknowledgement from the government as its sanctioning was not extended by the French sports ministry. With no government sanctioning, the organisation is not able to field an official National team under the "France" name, but the ICC has permitted it to play as "France Cricket" within the period until Registration.
This crisis puts into the spotlight the long-standing troubles related to the management of cricket in France. Past inquiries already questioned the priorities of the administration, its financial stability and the existence of rigged matches.
Despite the country's instability, France Cricket vice-president Gurumurthy Palani was elected as one of the ICC's Associate Member Directors at the Annual Conference in Edinburgh. He was also elected as chairman of the ICC Development Committee, something which has gained attention in the light of France Cricket's current difficulties.
As existing ICC funding has now been stopped, and with government recognition still lacking, and governance reforms now a requirement, it is possible that in the coming 12 months France Cricket will not only lose its status as an ICC Member but may no longer be able to participate in international cricket at all.
