Retired Hurt vs Retired Out
A batter retired hurt would be allowed back onto the pitch to continue batting should he feel he has recovered, and his status would be indicated as 'Retired Not Out' and, as described in Marylebone Cricket Club Law 25.4, may take his place to bat again following the fall of a wicket.
A batter Retired Out would be indicating that he has chosen to come off the pitch and not to return to bat as another may take his place. A batter Retired Out cannot continue to bat at any point.
Pant's situation is one where injuries affect the games to teams when they need them most and such occurrences happen all too frequently due to the high-octane nature of IPL cricket.
