Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir fired fresh shots at Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Gambhir showed his disappointment toward the two Indian legends who sat next to Suryakumar Yadav but he did not name them.
Team India created history by winning the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad and becoming the first team to defend the title. The Men in Blue also became the first side to win three T20 World Cups.
During the post-match press conference, Gambhir again appeared to aim his comments at Kohli and Sharma. The two legends who played for India have maintained a tense relationship with their head coach since he started leading the national team. Both Kohli and Sharma had already retired from the T20I format after the 2024 World Cup. They subsequently retired from Test matches because there was doubt about their playing prospects under Gambhir before India traveled to England in 2025.
Several reports earlier hinted at disagreements between the coach and the two senior players. The batters proved their worth through their performance which resulted in multiple runs during the international series against Australia and South Africa. The delivery of the results forced Gambhir to change his position which he had maintained until he became an advocate for new players before the 2027 ODI World Cup.
"We have played 160-170 cricket for long time. I didn't want this team to play that game. We wanted to play fearless, high risk high reward game. Credit goes to captain as well. I am not accountable to social media. I am accountable to 30 people in the dressing room. As far as bilateral ODIs are concerned, we have lost 2 ODI series in the last few months. So I wouldn't say that we are carrying a white-ball legacy. I would hence request you guys (Media Professionals) to not hype individual performances and keep the team goal ahead."
Gambhir emphasized the need for team achievements to take precedence over personal accomplishments which followed India's third consecutive ICC trophy win. He requested the media to stop excessively praising individual accomplishments while he referred to Kohli and Sharma without mentioning their names.
The World Cup-winning Indian team received their quick congratulations from Kohli and Sharma. Rohit attended the final at the stadium as a brand ambassador for the 2026 tournament while Kohli posted heartfelt messages online. Kohli created an Instagram story to honor Player of the Tournament Sanju Samson. The former captain congratulated the Indian wicketkeeper for his outstanding performance in the event.
MS Dhoni and Rohit both attended the final at Narendra Modi Stadium to support Team India. Dhoni famously led India to the first T20 World Cup title in the tournament's debut edition in 2007.
The Indian cricket team has maintained its successful performance after winning another ICC championship. The Indian Premier League 2026 season will begin on March 28 and that date will become the main focus for all activities. The team will aim for their primary goal which requires them to compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled to take place in South Africa and Namibia.
The Indian team has transformed into a powerful cricketing force which enables them to secure most important tournament victories during the past three years. The team achieved success because players worked together to create good team spirit which allowed them to rejoice in their teammates' triumphs.
The coaching staff encountered different problems because Gambhir created disruptive behavior in the training environment. His forceful character made this outcome predictable. The national team expects him to develop into a more mature leader who will oversee their activities.
The management of senior players requires a separate method which becomes essential when they played alongside you in the past. Kohli and Sharma display their strong character through all their actions. The two players demonstrate their ongoing dedication to the team whenever they step onto the field.
The two stars want to approach the 2027 World Cup with clear role definitions because of their exceptional accomplishments with India. Public criticism from the head coach during press conferences could not only frustrate the two legends but also create uncertainty within the rest of the squad.
Indian cricket now stands at a point which enables it to create a legacy that will receive admiration from both fans and teams for many upcoming years. But to achieve that goal, unity inside the dressing room will remain the most important factor. The three players of the team must develop a unified vision for their team to enhance their team connection. Shubman Gill must serve as the guiding example that leads upcoming Indian players through their development process according to his role as new captain.
