Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may have captured the imagination but Aakash Chopra the ex-India batsman feels the selectors will not rush 15-year old all-rounder.
BCCI selectors were told not to be taken in by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's mind-boggling exploits in the IPL 2026 by Aakash Chopra who insisted the teenage wonder needed time to grow.
The 15-year old batter has turned out to be a revelation this season. In the IPL 2026, the 15-year old is terrorizing the oppositions while playing for Rajasthan Royals with his fearless stroke play. The explosive batter and the unprecedented IPL story has become the talk of the town with some veteran cricketers calling for a national debut in the immediacy.
Sooryavanshi is now eligible to represent the Indian team as per ICC age rules but so far the BCCI appears to be carefully managing his progress. The 15-year-old is reportedly included in the India A squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka instead of getting directly promoted to the senior Indian side. However discussion of a T20I call-up continues due to the way he has dominated bowlers in the ongoing IPL 2026.
Aakash Chopra Urges Selectors to Take It Slow
While reacting to the hype surrounding Sooryavanshi, Chopra suggested the selectors to look at the bigger picture and avoid making hurried decisions based on an outstanding IPL season.
Chopra said :
"There is a World Cup in two years time. There is time. Yes he is something which you can't just ignore at all because the IPL is India's greatest T20 tournament so when a boy he's a special talent no doubt about it, if he is breaking records shattering records, then he's doing something special."
The former opening batsman added :
"But then you cannot just make changes just for the sake of changes, just because another boy has done brilliantly well. There is absolutely no problem with that. Very easy for anyone to get dropped, you've to fail that test. If you are the topper at this moment, then you can't just drop the topper thinking that another guy might get more marks."
'He's Not Indian Cricket': Chopra
Chopra emphasized that Indian cricket is bigger than any one individual, reminding everyone that Sooryavanshi has a lot of cricket ahead of him.
Chopra concluded :
"He's not Indian cricket. I mean, he is part of Indian cricket and that probably hasn't gone missing with the selectors and they will make the correct call but that can't happen tomorrow; it takes time. He's 20 years ahead of time; he doesn't have to rush."
He further suggested that if the youngster gets rushed into the international circuit at a young age it will lead to more pressure on him later if he goes through a tough phase in his career.
