IPL 2026: CSK Winning Again, But Reasons Why They Won't Celebrate Much

Chennai Super Kings register 32-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026: While it brings some respite to the CSK camp, the win also highlights some issues they need to improve to keep their journey on track.

This is their second successive win after IPL 2024.

CSK set 192/5 as the scoreline on the MA Chidambaram Stadium, which is considered a good score. However, the bowlers contained KKR on a score of 160/7 and registered a comfortable victory. But the team and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad would not be too pleased with the whole game play.

What are CSK worried about?

Fielding and batting need improvements: fielding has been a huge cause of concern for CSK throughout this edition of the tournament. Many catches were dropped on Thursday, which was expected from them to some extent.

CSK captain stated after the game:

"Yes, I think we dropped everything that came, just took one or two. It was a bit humid, so there was sweat, but that's not an excuse. We definitely need to improve."

The batting aspect also has been a concern. Despite setting up a score of 192, it is evident from the match that they lost momentum after the powerplay. Batting contributions were good from Sanju Samson, Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis, but it wasn't the case with the middle order in the slog overs.

Gaikwad is also to find his feet this season, and it adds more pressure on other players. Earlier losses to Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings saw them collapse similarly when finishing games.

Bowling stands out: It was a good outing for the bowlers and an even better one for Noor Ahmad who took three wickets giving just 21 runs in 3 overs. It's good that they held themselves in the match despite many missed chances from the fielders.

In spite of the wins, the bowling unit still requires good support from the fielders; to stop themselves leaking unnecessary runs and boundary. Entire team work is key as tournament progresses and opposition stiffens. With two consecutive wins, CSK is still in the lower half of the table as they have got a terrible net run rate. They really need to solve their fielding problems and get consistency in batting to remain in the play-offs contention.
