Indian Premier League (IPL) is one such league where greatness is judged not merely on the basis of runs and wickets, but on winning the IPL trophy.

Over the years, there have been several players who ruled the roost in the IPL with sheer dominance and match-winning brilliance. However, although all these legends have accomplished much individually, many of them haven't been able to win the IPL trophy yet.

Where franchises like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have created their dynasty, some other franchises have struggled to break the final barrier. While Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers have gained fame, broken records, and made history, these two players haven't been able to clinch an IPL trophy until now.

And even after Virat Kohli broke his long drought with a triumph in 2025, there are still many legends who haven't lifted the cup. Here's a list of the most unlucky XI players in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Universe Boss is definitely the most destructive batter in the history of IPL. The match-winning innings of 175* is perhaps the best T20 innings in the history of cricket. However, despite his great performances and being the leader of Royal Challengers Bengaluru team, Gayle failed to win any IPL title. On more than one occasion, he was close to winning the title, but he failed.

2. KL Rahul

KL Rahul is one of the most consistent batters in the history of IPL. His consistent performance of hitting more than 500 runs has made him one of the best batters in the world. Whether opening for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, or Lucknow Super Giants, he consistently delivers great performances, taking the team into playoffs stage. However, despite that, he has not yet managed to win any IPL title.

3. AB de Villiers

The batting style of AB de Villiers transformed T20 cricket through his full range of strokes. An integral player for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, AB's partnership with Virat Kohli is legendary in the IPL. Notwithstanding his many deep finishes in the competition, AB de Villiers left the game of cricket without winning the IPL.

He will forever be remembered as one of the best-loved cricketers who could transform matches by himself. That he was unable to win the IPL is the greatest sadness of the league.

4. Rishabh Pant

An icon of Delhi Capitals for a number of years now, Pant has displayed explosive batting skills and great leadership. He took his team into playoffs on several occasions and even led the team to the final once. Yet the absence of an IPL title from his name is a testament to the fact that Delhi could not seal its success during his tenure.

5. Glenn Maxwell

One of the best all-rounders in the history of the IPL, Glenn Maxwell played extremely well for the franchise of Punjab Kings in the year 2014. Though he performed impressively while representing other franchises too, Maxwell could never end up lifting any IPL title during his tenure. Even in the team that won the IPL, Maxwell was not considered among the core players.

6. Chris Morris

Chris Morris is known as one of the highest-priced players in the history of the IPL. In fact, he was famous for delivering under pressure. Being an all-rounder, he made contributions to multiple franchises using his skills both in batting and bowling. But even despite his consistent performance, Morris never managed to reach the winners' circle in an IPL final.

7. Anil Kumble (Captain)

One of the best bowlers India has ever produced, Anil Kumble captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2009 IPL Finals. Though his phenomenal performance of taking 4 wickets for just 16 runs was unforgettable, it did not help him win the match.

However, his strong captaincy skills along with discipline and cricketing knowledge made Kumble one of the finest captains of all time. Nevertheless, Kumble never managed to win any IPL.

8. Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra is considered one of the top bowlers of the IPL because of his many hat-tricks and wicket-hitting ability. In spite of his long innings and consistency in IPL, he never won the IPL title, although he played a big part in making the league successful.

9. Dale Steyn

With Dale Steyn, one of the most outstanding fast bowlers ever, joining the IPL, the game saw another high-speed bowler. Although he had the opportunity to play for different teams in the tournament, Steyn could not help any team clinch the trophy. He is among the many world-class cricketers who have never won the IPL.

10. Zaheer Khan

A swing bowler par excellence and an outstanding player of leadership qualities, Zaheer Khan played an essential role in helping his teams in the IPL tournament. While he made significant contributions to teams such as Delhi and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Zaheer Khan never won the IPL.

Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the top wicket-takers in IPL history. No matter whether he plays for RCB or Rajasthan Royals, he has been consistently successful and often produces match-winning performances. Nonetheless, although Chahal is definitely one of the most talented players in the league, he has yet to clinch an IPL title and thus is one of the most well-known players who have not managed to win such accolades.

Conclusion

Just like any other tournament, the IPL is both a team event and an opportunity to showcase individual skills. As can be seen, the selected Unluckiest XI features many talents who have given fans some of the best and most memorable performances. At the same time, the lack of a single IPL title is somewhat surprising given the overall quality of these players. Nevertheless, the unpredictability of the league means that talent is not enough at all times.
