Pat Cummins Warns of 'Tension Point' Between Franchise and International Cricket

Cricket Gully 1 month ago

Australia's Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins has acknowledged the current situation with international cricket vs franchise leagues.

He has labeled the sport "at a tension point", suggesting that it's no longer a given that players will chose their country over the higher income of franchises.

Cummins is currently in India to compete in IPL 2026 however he is yet to take the field. As captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Cummins is still on a managed program after suffering a lumbar stress injury.

Cummins states:

"I'm bowling basically every third day at the moment. We've mapped out a plan to get me right by the middle of the tournament, so hopefully if nothing goes wrong, I'll play the back half plus the finals."

Cummins has only represented Australia in one international fixture over the past nine months due to injury, however the Australian captain stated he is keen to be playing all three formats.

He said:

"Still very keen to play all three formats and at the moment I think we can make it work. I love Test cricket. Hopefully I'm in a cadence where I can keep doing that for three, four, five years and don't have to forgo Test cricket."

The 32-year old mentioned taking longer breaks for two-three month periods "to make sure I'm really fresh for the big test series or World Cup".

Franchise Leagues Growing, Australia Faces Big Decisions

The increase of franchise leagues and large sums being paid is placing Australia under pressure to manage it's players, as Cummins outlined.

He said:

"I think it's at a tension point. It has been for a while, but I think it's only growing."

He pointed out that countries like Australia and England have a strong passion for test cricket, however this is not uniform across the globe. Franchise leagues like the IPL and The Hundred are continually getting stronger.

"As Australian captain, something we speak about is how do we make sure we've got our best Australian guys to choose from when we're picking a Test side or an ODI side, because there is so much demand for them elsewhere."

Cummins uses an example of an upcoming test series against Bangladesh which clashes with The Hundred, where players have decided to choose national duty over the huge financial sums they could receive elsewhere.

Cummins said:

"Some of our guys are saying no to a half a million pounds for 20 days' work to go and play those two Test matches against Bangladesh – so I think it is a tension point."

However, this may not be the case forever as he explains:

"This is the essence: our guys are so keen to play for Australia that they're happy to forgo that, but I don't think we can just accept that's always going to be the case forever."

Cummins did point out that Australian players are well paid however he states this might not be the case in the near future and the Cricket Australia is looking into introducing new contracts to keep its stars.

"But our guys love playing Test cricket at the moment. But I don't think that's going to be the case forever. Someone else might have different priorities, so we've got to make sure that we adapt to that."
