Paul Stirling steps down as Ireland T20 captain ahead of India series in June

Paul Stirling has stepped down as Ireland's T20I captain following a disappointing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, with Ireland cricket team set to host India cricket team in a short T20I series in June under new leadership.

The development was confirmed by Cricket Ireland, ending Stirling’s tenure that began in 2023 after taking over from Andy Balbirnie. He led Ireland in 48 T20Is but oversaw two successive group-stage exits in T20 World Cups.

The June series against India, earlier under discussion, has now been officially confirmed as part of Ireland’s immediate schedule. It will be the first assignment for the incoming T20 captain, yet to be named.

Leadership change follows results, injury-hit campaign

Ireland’s 2026 T20 World Cup run included defeats to Sri Lanka and Australia, a win over Oman, and a washed-out fixture against Zimbabwe. Stirling’s campaign ended midway due to a knee injury sustained while fielding.

The results followed a winless 2024 edition where Ireland lost to India, Canada, and Pakistan, with another match abandoned due to rain. The pattern has effectively defined Stirling’s T20 leadership phase, where outcomes remained limited despite continuity in selection.

Vice-captain Lorcan Tucker led in Stirling’s absence during the final two matches, while Harry Tector remains a potential option for the role. Cricket Ireland has not announced a successor so far.

Stirling retains ODI role, board eyes transition phase

Stirling will continue as Ireland’s ODI captain as the team prepares for qualification towards the next 50-over World Cup in southern Africa. He stated that the decision allows him to “fully focus” on his role as a player while supporting the incoming T20 leader. In a statement released, Sterling said,

"I still have a huge amount of ambition as a player and feel this decision will allow me to fully focus on being the best version of myself and making the strongest possible contribution on the field.

"This feels like the right time for the team to move into a new chapter, and I wish whoever takes on the T20 captaincy every success. They will have my full support, and I look forward to working alongside them as we continue to build and push for success on the international stage.

"It has been a tremendous honour to lead Ireland in this format and something I have been incredibly proud to do. Captaining your country is a privilege that carries great responsibility, and I'm very grateful for the trust and support I have received during my time in the role."

Graham West, Ireland’s director of high performance, indicated that the timing enables a transition phase ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup cycle, with the India series acting as a starting point.

Ireland’s upcoming schedule also includes fixtures against New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan as per the ICC’s Future Tours Programme. However, confirmation of the full 2026 home summer is still pending.

Stirling had earlier expressed concerns over limited international fixtures, noting extended gaps in Ireland’s playing calendar during the previous season.
