Sheffield Shield 2026 Final: Victoria Lose 7 for 37 as South Australia Seal Stunning Title Win

South Australia savoured their Sheffield Shield victory on Monday morning with a massive grin as captain Nathan McSweeney and coach Ryan Harris beamed.

Less than 24 hours before this jubilant scene, South Australia looked hopelessly behind at 122-7 on Day 4, holding a lead of just 59 with Victoria well on top after a quick barrage of wickets from Scott Boland.

The unfolding then saw arguably one of the greatest come-from-behind finals in Shield history, with the South Australians snatching a second successive title and stunning the Victoria faithful.

Carey-McAndrew Stand Fips the Balance

Alex Carey and Nathan McAndrew seemed like the only men capable of changing the fortunes of South Australia as they put on a vital 105-run partnership in a position where South Australia were almost out of the game.

McSweeney said:

"I was definitely very nervous, was thinking that game just slipped away from our fingers, [but] Kez and Macca, able to just spend so much time in the middle, grind down a total and chip away [with the 105-run partnership]. We were thinking 130-140 is enough and to get 195 ahead gave us a huge amount of momentum and something really to bowl at".

Carey managed to grind out an impressive 60 runs off 144 balls although he had some luck during his innings as his leading edge at 43 fell just beyond the reach of the close-in fielders as they put on the valuable 105 runs which took them to 195 ahead, a lead which ultimately proved more than enough for the South Australians to defend.

Coach Ryan Harris was keen to identify this passage of play as the point where the match turned on its head. Harris said:

"That was probably the one for me. I reckon ten minutes before that I was thinking... If they get through this tonight, if we don't at least get one of them then it would have been a little tougher this morning no doubt".

South Australia managed to pick up 2 wickets just before stumps to put Victoria 102-5, Harris added:

"I think to be able to get them 5 down, with nine minutes to go stumps was really big, I think that was for the turning point".

Victoria's Collapse in Dominant Position

Victoria started the game well and looked extremely comfortable in pursuit of the 196 needed with Peter Handscomb and Marcus Harris forging a steady partnership of 67 for the 3rd wicket.

This momentum however was blown out of the water as the Victoria batting lineup capitulated losing 7 wickets for just 37 runs which included 5 for 27 on the final day. The Vics could not cope with the pressure, losing wicket after wicket as their dreams evaporated.

Coach Chris Rogers said:

"We got ourselves so far in front of the game, we were odds-on to win that game and then they fought their way back. This one hurts the most. I think going into these games I felt we were huge underdogs.... And we just lost the game".

Captain Will Sutherland said that if Carey's chance went to hand then it would have been a completely different scenario. "That goes, it's a different game altogether" Sutherland declared.

Different plans to get the score chase down and get back into the game failed, including the use of a nightwatchman, "I don't think that was the difference, I think we just didn't go about it the right way, and they played well." said Rogers.

This victory for South Australia would be a huge one, and coach Ryan Harris could not have summed it up any better, "This year was bloody hard, and that's what probably makes this a little bit more special".

It was the first time in ten years that a team playing at home had won the final, it means that South Australia are the first side to play away in a decade to win the Sheffield Shield Final.
