Dasgupta, who once donned the gloves for India, acknowledged that the red-ball team is indeed in a phase of transition. He urged the players to shift their focus from the World Test Championship final next year and instead concentrate on making meaningful improvements in their performances.

India's hopes of reaching the WTC final are looking quite bleak after suffering a significant home series defeat to South Africa at the end of 2025. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, the team is gearing up for a tough journey in the remaining 2025-27 cycle, starting with challenging away matches in Sri Lanka and New Zealand, followed by a five-Test series against Australia at home next year.

“I want to see much more development. Are we improving? Yes, there is inexperience and it’s a transition, but it’s important to see the improvement. In fact, I am going to say something that people may not like, but for the time being, it’s better to forget about WTC Final Qualification," said Dasgupta on his official YouTube channel.

Continuing his thoughts, Dasgupta encouraged the current Indian players to focus less on constantly honing their skills and more on achieving better results in their matches.

"It’s better not to talk about it. In my opinion, what we should instead focus on is how to make the Indian Test team like the one in 2020-21, like that phase where India were winning overseas and winning home series as well," added Dasgupta.

The upcoming tour of Sri Lanka poses a significant challenge for captain Shubman Gill, as this Test series could be pivotal for India's prospects in the ongoing World Test Championship. Right now, India's chances of qualifying for the WTC final seem quite slim, but if Gill's team can secure a victory against Sri Lanka, they will keep their hopes alive in the competition.
