Sai Sudharsan's superb knock was cut short in a startling way during Gujarat Titans' chase against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2026 held at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
The left-hander was given out hit wicket.
Gujarat Titans were looking all set to chase down the mammoth target of 215 comfortably, thanks to the opening partnership put up by Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. The two were absolutely dominating the Rajasthan Royals' bowlers, and put on 167 runs for the first wicket which is the highest stand for the first wicket in IPL play-off history.
However, just when Sudharsan was en route to yet another century, there was a dramatic dismissal that changed the atmosphere in the stadium.
Sai Sudharsan Goes Hit-Wicket Again
It occurred off the final ball of the 13th over, bowled by Brijesh Sharma. Sudharsan tried to guide a low full toss behind square on the off-side and he hit it straight for a boundary.
As Sudharsan completed his stroke, his bat lost grip from his hands and struck the stumps, and he was given out hit wicket.
"What would you believe it! Twice in two games Sudharsan is out hit-wicket," said the on-air commentary during the wicket.
Ex-India coach Ravi Shastri said in disbelief, "Where is the fevicol? Where is the glue?"
This was the second time on the trot that Sai Sudharsan had been out hit wicket in a similar manner. This is now the third time Sudharsan has been dismissed hit wicket in the IPL.
Record Partnership Keeps GT in Control
Before his strange dismissal Sudharsan played another blistering innings to register 58 off only 32 balls inclusive of 8 boundaries and 1 maximum, giving the Gujarat Titans total dominance of the run chase.
Shubman Gill continued to attack at the other end and was unbeaten on 95 from 45 balls at the time of this writing, Jos Buttler had just made his way to the crease with 46 needed off 42 balls for GT.
The Gill-Sudharsan partnership has broken a 15-year old IPL Playoff record.
Highest Partnership in IPL Playoffs:
- 167 - Shubman Gill & Sai Sudharsan (GT) vs RR, 2026 Qualifier 2
- 159 - Michael Hussey & Murali Vijay (CSK) vs RCB, 2011 Final
- 140 - Michael Hussey & Suresh Raina (CSK) vs MI, 2013 Qualifier 2
- 138 - Shubman Gill & Sai Sudharsan (GT) vs MI, 2023 Qualifier 2
- 136 - Manvinder Bisla & Jacques Kallis (KKR) vs CSK, 2012 Final
Notwithstanding Sudharsan's baffling dismissal, GT remains totally in command of the knockout match run chase.
