The Indian-American entrepreneur Sanjay Govil is said to be one of the leading names to invest in the Big Bash League franchise Hobart Hurricanes.

The development has surfaced amid continuing discussions about the privatisation in Australian cricket.

Govil confirmed his interest in the Tasmanian franchise, with his acquaintance with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting proving to be a primary reason behind it.

Govil said:

"Because of our close association with Ricky Ponting, who's our coach and a close friend for the Washington Freedom - he's obviously in Hobart - we are definitely interested."

The latest update brings to light Govil's expanding footprint in the various leagues and sporting endeavors worldwide.

Who is Sanjay Govil?

Sanjay Govil was born in Delhi in April 1966 and grew up there before emigrating to the United States. He began his career at IBM and Verizon.

Sanjay Govil is best recognized for establishing Infinite Computer Solutions, a worldwide technology services firm, in 1999. Over time, the company expanded to many nations.

He established Zyter|TruCare, a business in the digital health and enterprise tech domains, in 2017.

Additionally, Govil has an extensive academic record. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and subsequently a master's degree from Syracuse University as well as an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.

In 2002, Ernst & Young named him 'Entrepreneur of the Year.'

Govil's Growing Presence in Sports

Sanjay Govil has been systematically investing increasingly more in sports for the last couple of years. In cricket, more specifically.

He is one of the co-founders and investors in Major League Cricket in America and currently owns the Washington Freedom franchise (previously coached by Ricky Ponting).

In 2025 he also became involved in The Hundred, the new UK-based franchise competition, as he bought 49% ownership stake in Welsh Fire. The estimated amount for this deal was reported to be £40 million.

He also made headlines, after being rumored of placing a bid to buy Royal Challengers Bengaluru after speculation arose that the IPL team was to be sold.

Besides cricket, he also formerly owned the Delhi Acers badminton team in Premier Badminton League before selling the franchise before the 2017-18 season.

Hobart Hurricanes could also become a part of his sports portfolio with sources close to Govil reporting his interest in purchasing the Australian Big Bash League team.
