Why can't Tim David play his first match in IPL 2027? Australian punished after RCB retains IPL title

The RCB star Tim David won't have been handed a one-match suspension after his on-field behavior breached the IPL Code of Conduct.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru played their back-to-back IPL final under the leadership of Rajat Patidar. RCB defeated the Gujarat Titans by 5 wickets in Ahmedabad.

While RCB won the trophy, David landed with a financial loss and a ban in the next match. Notably, David was found throwing an ice bag towards the on-field umpire Nitin Menon. This innings happened in the 10th over.

This violates Level 1 under Article 2.9, which deals with “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match."

For this, David received two demerit points. Apart from that, he has also been fined 50% of his match fee. The Australian cricketer acknowledged the breach and agreed to the penalty handed down by match referee Javagal Srinath.

Why can't Tim David play the first match in IPL 2027?

The Australian all-rounder Tim David has been in multiple controversies throughout the tournament. Earlier, he had been penalized twice in the league. In match 20, against the Mumbai Indians, he refused to return the ball to the umpire. He was then fined 25% of his match fee and handed a demerit point.

In match 54, against the Mumbai Indians, after a dramatic last-ball win, David was caught on camera showing an offensive middle-finger gesture from the dugout toward the opposition. There he was, handed 2 demerit points and a fine of 30% of his match fee.

Therefore, it was his third, and he thus accumulated 5 demerit points after the final match against GT. This means he will suffer an automatic ban in his next IPL match, which will be his first match in the upcoming 2027 IPL.

David scored 305 runs at an impressive strike rate of 188.27, delivering the impact expected from a lower-order power-hitter. With the next mega auction still a year away, RCB are likely to keep faith in him.
