Chennai Super Kings players wore black armbands against Mumbai Indians during IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium as a tribute. This was for their team mate Mukesh Choudhary's mother, Prema Devi, who passed away due to a prolonged illness.
She had been admitted to Tata Hospital, Mumbai and was receiving medical attention before passing away on earlier this week. Prior to the game the whole CSK team paid tribute by wearing black arm bands.
CSK Pays a Tribute to Mukesh Choudhary’s Mother
Chennai Super Kings' management also took to social media with a special post to convey their sympathy.
The CSK post on X read:
“The CSK family mourns the passing of Mukesh Choudhary’s mother. We stand with Mukesh and his family, keeping them in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."
Mukesh has played one match this season and flew back to his home town Bhilwara, Rajasthan, after the match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He also performed the last rites along with his elder brother before returning to join the team for the clash against the Mumbai Indians.
This was a fitting tribute on display as the CSK team proved that they stand by each other even in their difficult times.
Dhoni Misses Match as CSK Deal with Changes
Apart from the heart mealting tribute by CSK, the Ruturaj Gaikwad led side were also without the talisman MS Dhoni. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter continues to work his way back from a calf injury and is yet to take part in IPL 2026 thus far.
Speaking pre-game, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed the absence of his skipper and said, “Yeah, obviously all thanks to the legend who is not here, unfortunately.”
Gaikwad added:
“But obviously it is because of him. We have a lot of support everywhere you go. So hopefully we'll make them happy tonight.”
The squad also saw a few other changes due to ongoing injuries and fitness concerns within the side.
While the result remained of significance in the context of the two sides' points tallies and IPL 2026 fortunes, the black armbands stood as a stark reminder of a wider dimension of sport, one that encompasses solidarity during moments of grief.
