Former India cricketer-turned-actor Yograj Singh has been booked in Chandigarh after a controversial scene from the web series Lukkhe triggered criticism over alleged misogynistic remarks.
According to ANI, Chandigarh Police registered an FIR at Sector 36 Police Station under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 62A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, following complaints over the viral clip circulating on social media platforms.
The scene, featuring Yograj Singh’s character Walia Sahib inside a police station, drew objections after explicit remarks directed at a female police officer were widely shared online.
Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the matter has been initiated after complaints alleged the dialogue insulted the dignity of women and crossed acceptable public language standards.
Viral clip sparks legal complaints and backlash
The controversy centres around a scene from the Hindi web series Lukkhe, available on Amazon Prime Video, where a female officer named Gurbani Kaur is introduced as capable and dependable.
Another officer praises her, saying, "She's one of my best, eh sambhaal lengi" (She will handle it), before Yograj Singh’s character responds with explicit Punjabi remarks widely criticised as degrading towards women.
Complaints were subsequently filed by Chandigarh-based advocates, with objections intensifying after the dialogue gained traction online. The Punjab State Women’s Commission also stepped in following the circulation of the clip.
Police action followed amid growing calls for accountability over the language used in the scene and the wider public reaction surrounding the dialogue’s circulation on social media platforms and news broadcasts.
Previous controversies return to spotlight
Yograj Singh, father of former India allrounder Yuvraj Singh, has frequently remained in public discussion over outspoken comments on cricket and social issues. Earlier this year, he generated debate through remarks related to players’ retirement decisions and comments concerning the role of women within families.
The latest case has again placed his public statements and screen appearances under scrutiny. Chandigarh Police have not announced any further legal developments beyond confirmation of the FIR and ongoing inquiry.
The investigation currently focuses on the viral clip, complaints submitted by advocates, and the applicability of the sections invoked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act. No official statement has yet been issued publicly by Yograj Singh regarding the police action.
