JAMMU, Aug 27: An informative health-awareness lecture on Seasonal Influenza (H1N1) and its prevention organized at the Golden Days Day Care Centre was held here today.

The lecture was delivered by Dr V K Gupta (Ex. SMO) for the senior citizens.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gupta explained in simple and practical terms that senior citizens are more vulnerable to complications from seasonal influenza, particularly those suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, asthma or other respiratory illnesses.

He highlighted the common symptoms of influenza, including fever, cough, sore throat, body ache, headache, tiredness and running or blocked nose.

Dr Gupta advised senior citizens not to ignore persistent or worsening symptoms and to seek medical advice at an early stage.

He particularly stressed the importance of preventive measures, including regular hand washing, avoiding close contact with people suffering from respiratory infections, wearing a mask in crowded places when influenza activity is high, avoiding unnecessary touching of the eyes, nose and mouth, maintaining adequate hydration and taking a balanced diet.

Dr Gupta also explained the warning signs requiring prompt medical attention, such as difficulty in breathing, chest pain, confusion, severe weakness, persistent high fever, bluish lips or face, and poor intake of fluids.

In a message to the senior citizens, he said, "Prevention is always better than treatment. Maintain hygiene, avoid unnecessary exposure, take recommended vaccination and seek medical advice early whenever flu symptoms develop."
