Ahmedabad, March 21: After nearly five years of investigation, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested the main suspect in a murder and robbery case from Chhattisgarh that occurred in 2021. The police announced the arrest on Saturday.
The suspect has been identified as Ajaykumar, also known as Lakshmisagar or Kimtishree Mishra. He was apprehended in the Naroda area of Ahmedabad after evading capture for several years following the crime in Tika Para, Raipur.
Investigators revealed that the case stems from a long-standing family dispute over property. Shakuntala Yadav, the widow of Amar Yadav, lived with her younger son, Amit Yadav, while her elder son, Ajay Yadav, had been living separately since 2017. According to police, Shakuntala and Amit frequently quarreled with Ajay over property matters and allegedly conspired to murder him.
Amit Yadav, who worked at Narayan Hospital in Raipur, came into contact with Mishra, who was employed there as a security guard. Aware of Mishra’s criminal background, Amit hired him for 400,000 rupees to carry out the murder, providing 100,000 rupees as an advance. The police reported that Mishra accepted the advance but fled to his native place without executing the plan. Months later, Shakuntala and Amit pressured him to either complete the murder or return the money. Mishra assured them he would finish the job soon.
Approximately four months later, Mishra, along with an accomplice named Ketan, also known as KT Ramsundar Tiwari from Kaushambi, visited Shakuntala’s home under the pretense of carrying out the hit.
DCP (Crime) Ajit Rajian informed a news agency that by this time, Amit Yadav had been imprisoned for another crime, leaving Shakuntala alone at home. The suspects abandoned the murder plan and decided to rob her instead.
Rajian further explained that they stayed overnight at the house and the next morning allegedly strangled Shakuntala with a pillow. They then fled with approximately 1 million rupees in cash and 30 to 35 tolas of gold jewelry. The stolen gold was later sold in Kaushambi.
To evade arrest, Mishra employed a tactic described by authorities as “digital silence.” He stopped using mobile phones and avoided identification documents like PAN or Aadhaar cards. He changed locations frequently, including Goa and Mumbai, before finally settling in Ahmedabad in 2022.
Authorities tracked him down based on technical intelligence and informant tips, leading to his arrest. Police officials are coordinating with Raipur police to transfer the suspect into their custody for further legal proceedings.
