Kolkata, April 9: A serious complaint has been filed against BJP candidate Deepanjan Chakraborty for allegedly campaigning in the National Security Guard (NSG) uniform during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The complaint states that on April 5, 2026, Chakraborty wore the NSG commando uniform while campaigning in the Adarsh Nagar and Shastri Nagar areas of Kanai Pur Gram Panchayat, which is a clear violation of the law.
The complaint, submitted to the Returning Officer of the 185 Uttarpara Assembly constituency, claims that Chakraborty attempted to improperly influence voters by donning the NSG uniform. Accompanying the complaint were photographs and video clips as evidence.
The allegations include serious charges that wearing the NSG uniform violates the National Security Guard Act of 1986. Although the candidate has repeatedly claimed to be a former NSG commando, his nomination papers (Form-26) only list him as a higher secondary pass and a retired employee of the central government.
Merely being a higher secondary pass is insufficient for service in the NSG. The candidate has not provided any certificates related to his alleged service in the NSG.
The complainant has labeled this behavior as ‘corrupt practice’ under the Representation of the People Act of 1951. They have urged the Returning Officer to conduct an immediate investigation, take action against the candidate, and ensure that the election process remains free from any misleading influences.
A copy of the complaint has also been sent to the Chief Election Commissioner, the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, the District Electoral Officer of Hooghly, the Home Secretary, and the Director General of the NSG. As of now, there has been no official response from the BJP regarding this matter. Deepanjan Chakraborty has previously campaigned as a former NSG commando, but questions are now being raised about his educational and service claims.
