Beijing, April 8: China's first independently designed and built 180,000-cubic-meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier has been successfully completed in Nantong, Jiangsu Province.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in the construction of high-value-added vessels for China.

The LNG carrier, measuring 298.8 meters in length and 48 meters in width, was constructed by China Merchants Industry Holdings (CMIH). It employs a dual-fuel, low-speed propulsion system, offering advantages such as reduced evaporation rates and enhanced environmental performance. This vessel symbolizes a major success for Chinese shipbuilding companies in the large-scale construction of clean energy vessels. It is also the largest LNG carrier ever completed in China.

LNG carriers are specialized ships designed for transporting LNG at temperatures as low as -163 degrees Celsius. Due to their complex design and construction, they are often referred to as the “crown jewel of the shipbuilding industry.” Only a few shipbuilding companies worldwide possess the true capability to construct such vessels.

With this delivery, China now has five shipbuilding companies capable of delivering LNG carriers, solidifying its overall manufacturing capacity on a global scale.
