Kolkata, March 14: The Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency has been a political battleground since its establishment in 1967. It is one of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal.
Over the years, it has witnessed significant shifts in power dynamics, reflecting the changing political landscape of the state. This trend is evident in the seven assembly seats within the Krishnanagar constituency, where voters frequently opt for change.
All seven assembly seats in the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency are located in Nadia district. These seats include Tehatta, Palashipara, Kaliganj, Nakashipara, Chapra, Krishnanagar North, and Krishnanagar South.
In the 2021 assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won all seats except Krishnanagar North, where Mukul Roy of the BJP emerged victorious. However, following his death last year, this seat became vacant. The Tehatta seat is also unoccupied due to the passing of TMC’s Tapas Kumar Saha, who won in 2021. Kaliganj’s TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed also passed away, but the seat was regained by TMC in a subsequent by-election.
Currently, the TMC holds the seats with Manik Bhattacharya from Palashipara, Alifa Ahmed from Kaliganj, Kallol Khan from Nakashipara, Rukbanur Rahman from Chapra, and Ujjwal Biswas from Krishnanagar South.
The Tehatta constituency was non-existent between 1977 and 2006. During the elections from 1951 to 1972, the Congress party won six times, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) secured a win in 1971. However, after the constituency was reorganized in 2011, the CPI(M) regained victory. TMC dominated in 2016 and 2021, but the BJP’s increasing voter base in recent elections poses a growing concern for the ruling TMC.
In Palashipara, TMC first won in 2016 and successfully repeated this feat in 2021. Before 2016, the CPI(M) was the only party that had not lost an election here since 1977. The Kaliganj assembly seat has frequently seen political shifts. Initially, Congress won six elections, but TMC reclaimed the seat in 2016 and solidified its position with another victory in 2021, followed by a win in the 2025 by-election.
Established in 1951, Nakashipara has seen 17 elections to date. Congress, CPI(M), and TMC have each won five times. However, since 2001, the dynamics have shifted, making it a stronghold for TMC, which has won the last five elections. Meanwhile, the BJP continues to strive to convert its Lok Sabha strength into assembly-level success.
The Chapra assembly constituency was established in 1962 and has held 15 elections since. Initially, from 1962 to 1972, the electorate frequently changed political parties. However, the CPI(M) established a stronghold in 1977, winning seven consecutive times until 2006. TMC has also achieved a hat-trick of victories from 2011 to 2021.
The Krishnanagar North assembly constituency came into existence in 2011 after reorganization. In three elections, two political parties have had their chances. TMC won in 2011 and 2016, while the BJP opened its account in 2021. Conversely, TMC has maintained dominance in the Krishnanagar South assembly constituency, winning in all three elections.
