Finance Minister: For The Poor More 5 Kg Free Grains For 3 Months Amid Lockdown

New Delhi: Nirmala Sitharaman announced several packages for people working in the front line in this crisis, for poor and farmers, and for the organized sector. These announcements are done to deal with the economic impact of coronavirus or COVID-19 lockdown. Announcement of 5 kg of wheat or rice and 1 kg of preferred pulses free-of-cost every month over the next three months to the 80 crore poor across the country was done among others.

Minster announced as many as of 20.5 crore women, Jan Dhan Account holders will get Rs 500 per month for the next three months to run their households. The poor senior citizens, widow and disabled will get an ex-gratia of Rs 1,000.

Also, the daily wage under MNREGA which used to be Rs 182 has been increased to Rs 202 which will benefit 5 crore workers in the whole country.

Under the existing PM Kishan Yojana, the minister said the government will install Rs 2,000 payment to farmers in the first week of April which will benefit 8.69 crore farmers.

The Minister said, for 3 months free cylinders will be given to 8.3 crore BPL families to ensure that no family will remain empty stomach. This forms part of the Rs 1.70 lakh crore Gramin Kalyan Package.

In India positive, cases of novel coronavirus or COVID-19 are rising rapidly and crossed 640 cases with 14 deaths so far. Worldwide it has taken more than 21,000 deaths with over 468,000 positively tested COVID-19 cases.
