3 More Die In Vedanta Power Plant Mishap, Death Toll Rises To 23

Raipur: Three more workers have succumbed to injuries, caused by the April 14 blast in the boiler of the Vedanta power plant at Singhitarai in Chhattisgarh's Shakti district, taking the death toll in the industrial mishap to 23, police said on Saturday.

While one of them died in a hospital in Raipur on Friday, two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospitals in Raipur and Raigarh in the state on Saturday morning, police said.

Twelve other workers, injured in the incident, were currently undergoing treatment in different hospitals in the state.

Condition of three of them was stated to be critical, police said.

A massive explosion in the tube connecting the boiler to the turbine in the power plant had led to the tragedy.

An FIR was registered against Vedanta Resources Limited chairman Anil Agrawal, plant head Devendra Patel and eight other staff members after preliminary investigation into the incident, conducted by the chief boiler inspector, suggested operational negligence, according to the police.

In a related development, Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday night ordered Bilaspur division commissioner to probe the incident.

He has been asked to submit his report within 30 days.

Terms of reference of the investigation included how the incident took place, cause of the incident and measures needed to prevent recurrence of such incident in future, official sources said.
