Tirupati: At 84, Kaduru Munemma thought her final years would pass quietly with medicines, family support, and some peace. Instead, the elderly woman from Chennappanayudupeta village in Pellakuru mandal of Tirupati district is now living in fear and seeking protection from the government over a property dispute within her own family.
Munemma, who is suffering from age-related health problems and struggling to walk after a hip operation, submitted a petition to the District Collector on Monday, alleging harassment and threats from some of her daughters and a grandson after she sold land to meet her medical expenses.
According to her petition, Munemma has five daughters and had distributed five acres of land among them after the death of her husband. She kept one acre for her own maintenance and treatment expenses. She said that only her youngest daughter, Ramayanam Jyothi, had been taking care of her for the past 30 years, while the others stayed away.
The elderly woman had earlier sold 34 cents of land for medical treatment. In 2013, she gifted the remaining 66 cents to her grandson, Ramayanam Sekhar, who was looking after her. Recently, the land was sold again to arrange money for urgent treatment, following which disputes reportedly began within the family.
"They are telling me that I have no right to sell the land. They warned me not to come near the field and threatened to kill me and the buyers," Munemma stated in her complaint.
She alleged that her daughters, Alam Vijayamma and Chokkani Malliswari, along with her grandson Alam Dorababu and a local resident, Aruru Subrahmanyam, had been mentally and physically harassing her.
With weak health and little support, Munemma has now appealed to the district administration for police protection and justice under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 so that she can live her remaining years without fear.
"I am old, weak, and living with health problems. I sold the land only for my treatment and survival. At this age, I am unable to bear the threats and harassment. I request the district administration to protect us and allow me to spend my final days peacefully without fear," Munemma appealed in her petition.
