VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the undisputed frontrunner in implementation of the Union Government's street-lighting national programme, reinforcing its leadership in energy efficiency and sustainable urban development.

With over 29.47 lakh LED streetlights installed across rural and urban areas in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), the state has recorded the highest implementation, setting a benchmark for other states to follow.

Nationally, the programme has achieved remarkable outcomes, including the installation of 1.36 crore LED streetlights, annual energy savings of 9,031 million kWh, and monetary savings of ₹5,400 crore. It has also helped avoid peak demand of 1,505mw while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 6.2 million tonnes annually.

In AP alone, EESL's interventions in urban local bodies have resulted in annual energy savings of 390 million kWh, a monetary savings of ₹234 crore, and a reduction of 0.36 million tonnes in CO2 emissions.

These figures underscore the state's rapid and effective execution of the programme.

Principal secretary Suresh Kumar said that building on this success, the state was now preparing for a technological leap with Phase-II of the Urban Smart LED Streetlighting Programme. An MoU signed at the CII Global Summit in Visakhapatnam marked the beginning of this ambitious phase, which would introduce an IoT-based Integrated Lighting Management System (ILMS) across more than 7.5 lakh streetlights.

Kumar stated, "The ILMS will enable real-time monitoring, automated operations, centralised fault detection, and significant reductions in power wastage. It is also expected to lower municipal electricity bills, enhance public safety, improve operational efficiency, and generate local employment opportunities."

He, along with commissioner of municipal administration Sampat Kumar, has stressed strict adherence to timelines. EESL CEO Akhilesh Dixit has said the tendering process would be completed by May 2026.

Reiterating the chief minister's vision of achieving 100 per cent LED street lighting coverage, Suresh Kumar said the initiative would position Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in future-ready, sustainable urban infrastructure.
