Guwahati: Amid the overcast skies and intermittent rains, more than 84 percent people came out on Thursday to exercise their franchise in the assembly election in Assam.
The office of the chief electoral officer Assam said that they have recorded 84.42 percent votes till 5 pm but there were reports of a large number of voters standing outside the polling booths at 5 pm. Informing that all those voters standing in the line by 5 pm, will be allowed to cast their votes, officials said that overall poll percentage would go up.
The ruling BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the Congress seeks to wrest power after being ousted in 2016. The polling for 126 seats was held in Assam where over 2.50 crore electors were eligible to exercise their franchise with 722 candidates in the fray. The BJP-led NDA is seeking a third consecutive term. The Congress-led alliance includes Asom Jatiya parishad, Raijor Dal and CPI(M).
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma and their two children, Nandil and Sukanya exercised their franchise at No. 15 Garal Buniyadi Lower Primary School. Mr Sarma, the BJP candidate from Jalukbari, is seeking re-election from the seat for the third consecutive term as BJP candidate. He is representing the seat since 2001.
Before heading to the polling station, Mr Sarma visited the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati to offer prayers. Speaking to the reporters, his wife expressed confidence in his victory, saying, "It is a 100% sweep."
Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, who is leading the alliance of opposition political parties, exercised his franchise in Jorhat. He appealed to all voters of the state to come out in large numbers and exercise their Constitutional rights to secure their future. Mr Gogoi said, "Today, in the interest of building a new Assam, in the interest of securing our present and future, it is essential that we vote with our conscience. I wish everyone who came out to vote for the first time all the best. Jai Aai Assam." The deputy leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha is contesting from the Jorhat constituency in Upper Assam.
Meanwhile, the election was peaceful across the state accept a few incident of clashes in Barrak Valley.
The authorities said that a violent clash was reported from a polling station in Assam's Patharkandi constituency, halting voting for nearly two hours at Booth No. 513 in Rangamati Primary School.
Informing that Congress candidate Kartik Chandra Sinha was involved in the incident, where the EVM was damaged, authorities said that there was an attempt to steal the EVM from inside the booth. Around 15 BJP workers, including women, were reportedly injured, with polling agents allegedly targeted first.
Police, led by Superintendent Leena Doley, reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Polling later resumed with a replacement EVM under heavy security.
In another in central Assam's Sonitpur a poll official was found dead. Informing that Deben Horo (45) was deputed as the second polling officer in the Naduar constituency, officials said, "Hore was deputed in polling station no 230 in Dolapani LP School. He was found unconscious in his bed on Thursday morning. He was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance, but he was declared dead by the doctors."
Amid ongoing voting in Assam, Congress candidate from Nazira, Debabrata Saikia alleged irregularities and accused the Election Commission of biased conduct.
Mr Saikia confronted a Booth Level Officer (BLO) at a polling station in Nazira, identifying her as Monika Das, and claimed that she was carrying an identity card bearing the BJP symbol.
In a poll related incident residents of a village under Kaki Rampur Panchayat in the Lumding constituency boycotted voting. The people of No. 1 Kaki, Ward No. 4 village collectively decided to abstain from voting, citing long-standing issues related to lack of proper connectivity and transportation.
A voter collapsed and died while standing in line at a polling station in Gauripur constituency of Dhubri district. The incident took place at polling station number 2108, Mora Gadhadhar Char LP School, where voters were waiting their turn to cast their ballots. The deceased has been identified as Babar Ali (54).
In a surprising incident many voters alleged that their votes were already cast in Polling Station No. 30 in Geetanagar under the New Guwahati constituency when they reached to exercise their franchise.
According to allegations, votes were cast in the names of genuine voters by unidentified individuals. Several voters reportedly found that their votes had already been recorded when they arrived at the polling station.
Sources claimed that officials were unable to provide details about who had cast these votes.
A Sri Lankan delegate, who is part of the international delegation in Assam to observe the election process, planted a sapling at a polling station in Kamrup to symbolise commitment to eco-friendly electoral practices.
