Odisha Politics: BJP Gains Early Momentum As Opposition Struggles Ahead Of Panchayat Polls

Deccan Chronicle 1 week ago

BHUBANESWAR: With Odisha gradually moving towards the next panchayat elections, likely to begin early next year, the ruling BJP appears to have gained an early political advantage amid visible inactivity and organisational uncertainty within the opposition camp.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has already intensified its organisational preparations in the state following its victory in the 2024 Assembly elections. Senior party leaders and strategists have begun holding meetings with state-level functionaries, indicating that the BJP considers the rural polls crucial for consolidating its grassroots presence ahead of the 2029 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Recent visits by national BJP leaders, including president Nitin Nabin, and internal strategy discussions suggest that the party is focusing on strengthening its organisation in rural Odisha, which has traditionally played a decisive role in shaping the state's political direction.

In contrast, the opposition space appears fragmented and relatively inactive.

The Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal, which ruled Odisha for over two decades, has so far not shown major visible mobilisation for the upcoming panchayat polls. Political observers believe the party is currently passing through a transition phase after losing power in 2024.

Beyond occasional public statements by Naveen Patnaik, most senior BJD leaders have maintained a relatively low political profile, raising questions about the party's strategy to revive its grassroots network as an opposition force.

The condition of the Indian National Congress in Odisha appears even more challenging. The Congress has yet to launch any sustained statewide movement capable of rebuilding its shrinking support base. Apart from limited programmes by the state leadership, the party has struggled to project itself as an effective opposition alternative.

Political analysts also point to the absence of major intervention by the Congress high command in Odisha since the 2024 elections, which has reportedly affected worker morale within the party.

Meanwhile, smaller political outfits are attempting to utilise the opposition vacuum. The newly floated Odisha Janata Congress has started limited outreach activities, particularly in western Odisha, while the Aam Aadmi Party is also trying to expand its organisational visibility in the state.

The Left parties, once influential in labour and tribal belts, have largely remained politically inactive so far.

Political observers believe the upcoming panchayat elections may emerge as the first major political test in post-2024 Odisha, with parties seeking to strengthen their organisational base well ahead of the 2029 elections.
