Deccan Herald 1 week ago

Bengaluru: FC Bengaluru United held on to their nerves for a 1-1 draw against hosts MYJ-GMSC in I-League 2 to earn promotion for next season's Indian Football League in Mumbai on Friday.

Table toppers Delhi FC did FCBU a favour by holding third-placed United SC to a 1-1 draw in Kalyani, West Bengal, while becoming the champions in the process. Both FCBU and Delhi FC will play in the Indian Football League next season.

Bengaluru United, however, breathed easy early in their match as Lijo K headed in from close range following a cross from Shunjanthan Ragui to take the lead. MY-GMSC levelled through Shravan Shetty early in the second half (47th minute).

However, the other decider was soon locked at 1-1 too, making FCBU's task simpler by holding on to the scoreline to ensure promotion.

"This moment belongs to our players, coaches, staff, fans, academy families and the entire city that stood behind us through the journey. To see the passion, energy and belief around the club today is truly special. We're proud of how far we've come, but even more excited about what lies ahead for FC Bengaluru United and the future of football in this city," said Gaurav Manchanda, FCBU owner.

Meanwhile, SC Bengaluru, who went out of the promotion run last week, finished fourth in the I-League 2 with a 1-2 victory over hosts Sporting Goa in Bambolim. A brace from Karthik Thirumalai (28th, 56th) sealed the consolation win despite late push from Sporting through Ivon Costa (78th).
