Gadag: Bheeshma lake, one of the major attractions in Gadag city, is in a poor state due to uncleanliness and improper maintenance. Despite warning boards, some people continue to dump waste around the lake, marring its beauty and polluting the surroundings.
The warning boards installed in the area caution that legal action will be taken against those who dump waste around Bheeshma lake and Simhada Kere.
Ironically, heaps of waste are also visible near these signboards and across the lake surroundings. Residents appear to have ignored the warning of legal action. As a result, environment around the lake has deteriorated.
After visiting various tourist places in the district, many visitors head to Bheeshma lake. The expansive waterbody, the giant Basavanna statue and boating facilities attract large numbers of people. However, visitors also express disappointment after witnessing the polluted surroundings.
Waste polluting water
People said that large quantities of waste are being dumped indiscriminately around Bheeshma lake. The garbage includes solid waste, liquid waste, plastic, electronic waste, and construction debris. Open defecation and urination are also common in the area.
Much of this waste is washed into the lake during rains and by wind, contaminating the water. This poses risks to aquatic life, boating enthusiasts and residents living nearby.
During the monsoon, decomposing garbage creates foul odours and an unpleasant atmosphere. Waste is often set on fire, spreading smoke and stench while contributing to air pollution. Unwanted vegetation has also spread extensively around the lake, people expressed unhappiness.
Neglected park
The road connecting the nearby park to the lake has deteriorated significantly. The tar surface has peeled away, leaving loose gravel scattered across the stretch. This has hampered both pedestrian and vehicular movement.

A public toilet near Bheeshma lake, constructed only a few years ago, is now in a dilapidated condition. The urinals, toilets, wash basins and taps have been damaged, reflecting poor maintenance.
The park located nearby has also fallen into neglect. Play equipment is not in usable condition. Three plastic water tanks have been installed for water supply, but the connected pipelines do not even have taps.
Gousuddin Harlapur, a visitor said: "Bheeshma lake is a special landmark of Gadag city. Maintaining and developing it is the responsibility of the local administration."
'Case pending in court'
"A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in court, seeking to restrain development works within the Bheeshma lake premises. The verdict is expected shortly and we will take up lake protection measures thereafter," said Gadag-Betageri City Municipal Council (CMC) Commissioner Rajaram Shivaji Pawar.
