Amstelveen: Two defensive lapses saw India suffer a 1-3 defeat at the hands of reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands and virtually crash out of semifinal contention in the men's hockey World Cup at the Wagenar Stadium here on Saturday.
Capitalising on the Indian lapses in a fast-paced encounter, the Netherlands secured their passage into the semifinals. Carrying forward three points from their preliminary round win over Argentina, the Dutch now have six points and assured of a place among the two top teams in the second stage round-robin league's Pool E.
India, who lost to England and came into the second stage without any points, are yet to earn their first point in the second stage that has replaced the quarterfinals in this World Cup. India will face Argentina in the last group fixture on Monday and then go into the playoffs for minor positions.
Four-time champions the Netherland set a very fast pace that India did well to match throughout the encounter. India were desperate to earn at least one point from this encounter, but failed to capitalise on the few chances that came their way, and only managed to score once from the six penalty corners earned. Yet, it was two defensive lapses that proved India's undoing.

Soon after, Dutch striker Floris Wortelboer was shaping for a reverse drive at the Indian goal, but Sukhjeet Singh did well to mark him tightly inside the circle and the shot went wide to the right.

Vivek Sagar Prasad worked his way into the scoring zone in the 20th minute and sent a square ball into the goalmouth, only to see the chance go waste as there was no striker in position to capitalise.
Three minutes later, another Indian raid put pressure on the Dutch defence when Abhishek's diagonal ball from right was trapped by Dilpreet Singh in the circle, but the goalkeerper was right in front of him and the weak push was easily passed away. The rebound, however, went to Rajinder Singh on top of the scoring zone. A flash strike by Rajinder could have posed immense danger to the Dutch defence that with in disarray, but he decided to move deep into the circle and the opportunity was lost.
The first half ended goalless but not before Indian goalkeeper HS Mohit brought off a fine save on a goal-bound flick by Tjep Hoedemakers from an acute angle on the left.

A rebound went toward Tijmen Reyana on top of the circle and he sent a forward pass to Duco Telgankamp, whose reverse flick slowly went over the goalline past counfounded goalkeeper Suraj Karkera.
India tried to bounce back and went charging out for an equaliser, forcing a series of penalty corners but the Dutch defensive wall could not be penetrated.

Just as the game was sliping away, Indian skipper Harmanpreet brought them back into the contest with a stinging penalty corner shot that sounded the boards in the 52nd minute.
Then came a midfield lapse by seasoned Manpreet Singh, who failed to keep control of the ball in the centre as India were going into the attack. This led to a counter attack in which the Indian defence was left wide open. The Indian goalkeeper found himself alone in front of three strikers in the circle and could only watch Thijs van Dam flick into the open goal despite Manpreet making a desperate attempt to smash the bouncing ball out of the goalmouth.
