Bengaluru: Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddi told the Legislative Council on Monday that at least 28,000 to 30,000 engineering seats are going vacant every year and that there are no plans to establish new government engineering colleges.
Replying to the question by Congress MLC Basanagouda Badarli requesting for a new engineering college at Sindhanur, Rayareddi said, "I will verify the request, but the government is interested in setting up Skill Development Centres instead of new colleges."
He further informed the House that the reason for not starting new government engineering colleges is the number of unfilled seats. "For the last three years at least 25,000 to 30,000 engineering seats have remained vacant. Sindhanur students can study at colleges in Gangavathi, Raichur and Talkal," said the minister.
