The Central government and the Opposition are headed for an unprecedented showdown in Lok Sabha over a bill to amend the Constitution to allow a new regime for delimitation based on the updated census data.

The three bills in focus are the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Delimitation Bill, 2026, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026. These bills will enable new delimitation process, increase the Lok Sabha's strength from 550 to 850, and provide 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.

"Congress party unequivocally supports Women's Reservation. Parliament unanimously passed the bill in 2023, it is already part of our Constitution. What the government is proposing now has nothing to do with women's reservation," Rahul Gandhi posted on X with a video message.
"This amendment is an attempted power grab using delimitation and gerrymandering. We will not allow 'Hissa Chori' from OBC, Dalit and Adivasi communities by ignoring the caste census data. We will also not allow Southern, North Eastern, North Western and smaller states to be treated unfairly," the post further read.

"This was the Opposition's position in 2023 and this continues to be the position even now. This is true power-sharing and vastly more democratic and in keeping with Constitutional values and principles."

"If you want to give 33 per cent reservation to women, you can implement it within the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats. There is no need to increase the number of seats or carry out delimitation according to your political interests. Otherwise, this should not be called a women's empowerment bill but rather a BJP-oriented bill."
